We are still adding up the numbers, but it seems like Saturday's event was a great success. We certainly had one of the largest crowds ever and everyone seemed to be having a wonderful time.
For the second year in a row, we tried to give away a car courtesy of Coughlin Automotive and were unsuccessful.
Rave reviews were heard about the food provided by Heritage Catering.
We will be back later this week with a final report, but for now, we want everyone to know how much we appreciate your support for Java & Jazz and for Mental Health America of Licking County.
Here is a link to coverage in the Newark Advocate.

Don Gunnerson to be Sauteed on Friday
In today's Advocate, there is a wonderful profile of local artist Don Gunnerson who is to be the subject of a good-natured "sautee" at Friday evening's Grand Illusions event to raise funds for Ohio Cancer Research Associates. (One of the speakers at Friday's event will be Bob McGaughy who will be our host the very next night for the auction.)
The article is a nice profile of Gunnerson and his many contributions to both the culture and the landscape of Licking County.
We are fortunate to have had examples of his work to auction at our Java & Jazz events.
His gifts as an artist are undeniable and his contributions to Licking County are substantial.

The Dance Will Find You
In the days before last year's Java & Jazz auction, we received a flurry of donations including a package that included bellydance lessons. I am always looking for exotic and unusual items for our guests to bid on and this certainly seemed to fit the bill.
Little did I know the class had also captured the imagination of my spouse. As we were preparing the auction item descriptions, she did her usual due diligence and uncovered all manner of information about the history of the dance and its key practitioners.
We learned, for example that "bellydance" is a term coined at the 1893 World Columbiana Exhibition in Chicago in reference to the traditional dances of many different countries in the eastern Mediterranean and north Africa. To us it's "bellydance," but to them it's just dancing.
By the night of the auction, my spouse was hooked and ended up bidding on and winning the classes.
If we are very fortunate, we get to run across one or two really talented teachers in our lives, people who see their students for who they can be and help them to find their way to becoming that person. Kristen found such a teacher in Ms. Chandara Gamal, founder of Bellydance Columbus and donor of the package up for bid at this year's auction.
I have written elsewhere about Ms. Chandara and so I will only say that there is a gift in store for the person who wins this package. Students of all skill levels can learn this ancient dance form and become empowered by it. What you notice right away is that they dance as much for themselves as they do for any audience.
The package up for bid includes a veil, a hip scarf, a pair of zills and a Class Pass for six lessons. You don't have to be a serious dancer in order to benefit from these classes. Go with an open mind and the dance will find you.
Building Dreams
I like visiting places like Hearst Castle at San Simeon or George Vanderbilt's Biltmore Estate because the represent the singular vision of their owners. They found a piece of land, or transformed it and set about building their dreams.
Fern Falls Bed & Breakfast, in Altamont, TN, is another such place.
Owner Ron Van Dyke first visited the area as a boy and apparently fell in love with it. Fern Falls represents 10 years of hard hand crafted work to show the land off to its best advantage. In this too-brief collection of images, you will get a sense of his unique vision. There is a video profile of Mr. Van Dyke and the Fern Falls property here (look for episode 2007).
We are grateful to Mr. Doug Litteral, Development Director for the Licking County Aging Program for making this opportunity available to us.

Mental Health America of Licking County’s Executive Director and inveterate sports fan, Paddy Kutz was so excited to secure a donation for their upcoming Java & Jazz benefit auction from Newark native and Texas Rangers pitcher Derek Holland.
“There’s a lot of people after these,” she said. “They’ve been holding them for us under lock and key.”
The autographed size 11 Under Armour baseball cleats are just one of items up for auction at the March 5th event taking place at the Reese Center on the Newark Campus.
In addition to the more than 70 items to be auctioned off, each guest will participate in a drawing for a chance at a 2011 Toyota Camry courtesy of Coughlin Automotive of Newark.
According to Kutz, the auction is a critical fundraiser for her agency.
“There is so much uncertainty right now about money. The only thing that is certain is that people need our help and we have to do everything we can to make sure we are still here to answer their calls.”
Tickets for the event are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. They can also be purchased online at www.mhalc.org.
More information about some of the items up for bid can be found at www.javaandjazz2011.blogspot.com.
Mental Health America of Licking County, an affiliate of Mental Health America, is a partner agency of the United Way and the Community Mental Health & Recovery Board.

Do the Continental
![]() |
Shot from the 1934 film "The Gay Divorcee" that introduced "The Continental" to American dancers. In the 1934 film The Gay Divorcee, Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire have a 17-minute dance number called "The Continental." Though never a big hit, the song, "The Continental" was the first dance song to win an Academy Award. According to www.streetswing.com, the dance was always more of a exhibition number rather than a social dance. One thing is certain, it was designed to get you moving and so is the airline of the same name. Again this year, Continental Airlines is providing us with 2 travel coupons good for travel in the Continental US (including Alaska), Canada, the Caribbean and Central America. The winning bidder will have 12 months from the date of the Auction to book and complete their travel. |
Jack Sparrow Ain't Got Nothing on Long John Silver
I know, every generation thinks they discover the classic genres of storytelling. Nobody had ever done a western before Russell Crowe did "3:10 to Yuma" and Johnny Depp has made everybody forget about "Cutthroat Island."
But I have to say that my image of a pirate from the Spanish Main is Robert Newton in Disney's "Treasure Island." He was an early model for how adults could not always be trusted.
Today, thanks to Captain Jack Sparrow, our ideas of piracy are much cuddlier. They do not so much suggest sociopaths as what used to be called "dipsomaniacs."
Very different image.
One thing pirates of all diagnoses have in common is the need for a safe harbor.
Whether you are captain of the Black Pearl or something much smaller, after being the scourge of the seven seas, you yearn for a place to anchor up and give your sea legs a rest.
Such a place can be found at Treasure Island in Florida and, for the winning bid, you can be the pirate to come ashore there.
The winning bidder will have a week's use of a private condo on Boca Ciega Bay. This 1500 square foot retreat has two bedrooms, two baths and a fully equipped kitchen. (Click on the video below for a tour of the condo.) And there are plenty of local attractions to keep you occupied.

Local Boy Makes Good, We Sell His Shoes!
Newark native and Texas Rangers pitcher Derek Holland has had a couple of terrific season in "the bigs."
He has an 11-17 record and his pitched in both American League Championship Series and World Series games. At the end of the 2010 regular season, he had a 4.08 ERA.
I'm not a big sports guy, but my boss, who is serious about her sports, is thrilled that we have a pair of Mr. Holland's Size 11 baseball cleats to offer at the auction. The Under Armour shoes are signed and inscribed "ALCS Champs."
Included with the shoes is a signed baseball.

Java & Jazz Filling to the Brim
Floor space is at a premium in the MHA offices as last-minute merchandise donations pour in for this year’s Java & Jazz benefit auction.
Set for Saturday, March 5th at the Reese Center on the Newark Campus, the event will feature live and silent auctions, delicious hot and cold appetizers by Heritage Catering and the music of the Tom Carroll Duo.
“We are so grateful,” said MHA Executive Director Paddy Kutz. “This community has really come forward with some interesting items for our guests to bid on.”
Among the items up for bid are vacation home stays in North Carolina and Florida, Cleveland Indians baseball tickets, travel coupons for Continental Airlines, portrait photography sessions and an island-hopping cruise of Lake Erie.
A regular feature of the auction continues to be works by local artists. This year, bidders will have the chance to buy works by Kathy Anderson, Marilyn Stocker and Don Gunnerson.
Inveterate sports fan Kutz, has made certain that her beloved Buckeyes are represented with a collection of personally selected memorabilia from this year’s Sugar Bowl win in New Orleans and an autographed bow tie for President E. Gordon Gee.
For those who might strain themselves transporting all of their auction purchases out to their vehicles, a number of local providers have donated massages. And to relieve the tension of bidding at the event, a representative from the Banyan Leaf Spa at Cherry Valley Lodge will be on hand to provide 1-minute backrubs to event guests.
Again this year, thanks to Coughlin Automotive, Java & Jazz will feature a drawing for a chance to win a 2011 Toyota Camry LE.
Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Tickets may also be purchased online at our website through a secure PayPal link.
We hope to see you there!
You Want to Touch it, Don't You?
There may be some for whom this is not a remarkable experience, but for me, getting to have a serious conversation about buying a TV that looks like the monolith from "2001: A Space Odyssey" was like being Dave Bowman and finding myself in that formal bedroom from another planet.
I have a TV, but I might as well try and watch movies on an Etch-A-Sketch after looking at what's possible with LED technology. My TV is the first job out of school TV that I lavishly purchased with my tax refund. It's has a whopping 32" glass picture tube that, I am here to tell you, is no fun to carry by yourself up 5 flights of stairs.
When I got it home, I was thrilled. It dwarfed both my apartment and all other TVs I had ever experienced, but now, it is dead to me. I don't know how and I can't say when, but I am going to have to end our two decade long relationship because my head has been turned by a younger model.
I got to have this conversation about flat screen TV thanks to the generosity of one of our donors and the cooperation of our friends at Best Buy in Heath.
Armed with the donor's seed money, we were able to negotiate a discounted price on a 42" Westinghouse LED TV. Imagine, 10" larger than my soon-to-be ex and it uses 20% less electricity than a 100w light bulb.
We have paired this TV with a Blu-Ray disc player and the necessary cable: a quality picture cries out to be seen and enjoyed so VHS just wasn't going to cut it.
When I was in the store finalizing the transaction, I asked one of the sales associates what would be the best disc to show off what the TV can do. His first answer surprised me: "Speed Racer." He wasn't talking about the cartoon series, but the disastrous live action movie that came out in 2008.
My face must have reflected my inner skeptic, because he said, "No, really." He went on to tell me that the DVD had won some industry award for sound, or picture, or something. But, it didn't matter because they didn't have any in stock.
Instead of settling for something borrowed from a Japanese TV show from the mid-1960s, we went with something blue, Pandora blue.
As the blue maraschino cherry on this audio visual cupcake, we are including the 3-disc collector's edition of James Cameron's "Avatar."
You don't have to love the movie, but you will be powerless to resist the picture and sound coming from this hypnotically powerful flat black monolith.
Resistance is futile.
It was like driving your clunker to the dealership and testing one of their newer models: after you're finished your clunker seems all the more clunkier.

The World is but a Stage My Friend and Life is but a Game...
I still have a collection of vinyl record that are slowly decaying in my basement.
Amidst this mostly pretty embarrassing assembly of what is now referred to on iTunes as "soft rock" is a collection of comedy records. The most prized of this subset is a double album recording of Groucho Marx at Carnegie Hall.
On the recording he tells the story of how when they were doing Animal Crackers on Broadway, they needed 2 minutes for a scenery change. To cover the delay, he wrote what he called a "ridiculous poem" that goes mostly like this:

On the recording he tells the story of how when they were doing Animal Crackers on Broadway, they needed 2 minutes for a scenery change. To cover the delay, he wrote what he called a "ridiculous poem" that goes mostly like this:
Did you ever sit and ponder, as you walk along the strand,
that life's a bitter battle at the best.
And if you only knew it you would lend a helping hand,
then every man could meet the final test.
The world is but a stage, my friend, and life's but a game,
and how you play is all that matters in the end.
But whether a man is right or wrong, a woman gets the blame,
and your mother is your dog's best friend.
Then up came mighty Casey, and strode up to the bat,
and Sheridan was fifty miles away.
For it takes a heap of loving to make a home like that,
on the road to where the flying fishes play.
I can say with confidence that it is the only poem that I can recite from memory and it is one I often associate with live theatre.
Don't get me wrong, I have tremendous respect for the theatre--you can tell by my atrocious spelling. I go to the movies all the time, but there is something that happens when humans gather in the dark to listen to stories told by other flesh and blood humans that no amount of computers can match.
For performers, they talk about the interaction, the conversation that goes on between them and the audience. You can tell when the audience is paying attention in just the same way that they can tell when the performers are phoning it in. Actors get a high when they share that connection with the audience and, as audience members, we have all at one time or another felt the goosebumps that come from a terrific performance.
Once that's been experienced, on either side of the footlights, it's addictive and both audience and performer search for their next "contact high."
One lucky bidder at our event will have the opportunity to walk away from the auction and into the theatre of the Licking County Players with 4 gift certificates to their ongoing season. And they will be able to dress like insiders with a LCP tee, a scarf and a decorative pin featuring the masks of Comedy & Tragedy.
I think it might have been Shakespeare who observed that theatre is a lot like yogurt in that it's living and full of culture.
The Licking County Players are located at 131 W. Main St. in downtown Newark. Check out their website here.

"Soft Focus" by Marilyn Stocker |
Either they have been in her class, seen her in a show, or been to one of her art exhibitions.
When she delivered her donation for this year's auction, "Soft Focus," Ms. Stocker told us that she has spent a lot of time teaching watercolor techniques to art teachers around the state.
She noted that they are much more comfortable working in other media, but that watercolors are generally available, not so hard to work with and can produce good effects.
Like magician Marshall Brodein said in his many commercials, "Magic is easy, when you know the secret."
For the right price, you can study this piece of Stocker magic.
The Main Thing is the Maine Thing
![]() |
"Dusk" by Kathy Anderson |
It was late in the day and I was distracted so I just blurted out the first things that came to mind:
- It was the first place I saw the ocean
- It's where many people from Quebec go on vacation
- And it was in Maine that my brother stabbed another kid in the arm with a barbecue fork.
I think I may have also said that I thought it was known as "The Granite State."
So I was wrong about two things: Maine is "The Pine Tree State" and the injury was actually very close to the eye and not the arm.
Maine is also where my spouse claims to have had some of the best batter-fried shrimp of her life and it is the setting for the Discovery Channel series "Black Ops Brothers."
But none of this is important.
What is important is that Maine is the source of inspiration for some of the work by local artist Kathy Anderson, including her donation to this year's auction called "Dusk."
We are so pleased to have had the opportunity to showcase Anderson's work in recent years and want everyone to know that she is having an exhibition at The Works with Tony Reynolds, another artist who has contributed his talents to our auction in prior years. Their show, "Metamorphosis" opens on Friday, March 11th.

Mr. Gunnerson has used his training in architecture to capture the grand architecture of one of the world's most beautiful cities. The right bid at our March 5th event will capture this prize piece for your collection....

Don't Let Our Silence Fool You
When donations of merchandise for the auction were coming in at the rate of one per day, there was plenty of time to post about them. Now, not so much.
With the event 2-1/2 weeks away, the To Do list is getting longer as the available time goes in the other direction. With a little good luck, there should be some more updates on the way in the very near future.
What you haven't heard about is our 42" flat screen package, our domestic travel coupons of Continental Airlines, and our 2nd exciting Cleveland Indians package. And that's just a tease.
Tickets are still available.

Gavin George Plays For You
Gavin George, local piano prodigy, has been racking up the thousands of fans not only on YouTube but in his many local and national appearances.
Not bad, for a 7 year-old.
It is inspiring to listen to him and now, through the generosity of his parents, you can do that anytime you wish. Mr. & Mrs. George have donated a DVD of his appearance with the Newark-Granville Symphony Orchestra that was recorded at Swasey Chapel on the Denison University Campus last October.

Fill My Glass with The Works!
We are very fortunate to have a museum in our backyard of the caliber of The Works.
Embracing the vision of founder Howard LeFevre, The Works has expanded from its initial industrial focus to a celebration of all aspects of life in Licking County.
Visitors can marvel at the mastadon skull hanging over the stairwell, visit the Land of Legend Shops, or learn about principles of science at one of their many hands-on educational exhibits.
One of the most fascinating displays is the Works Glass Studio where visitors can see where art and science come together in the creation of original works of blown glass.
The Works has very generously provided us with an opportunity for one lucky bidder and 3 guests to visit the museum and experience all of their wonderful offerings. Included in this package is a hand-blown glass vase.
The Works is located at the corner of First and Scheidler in downtown Newark.

NAC Rep Casey Claxon is a good friend to MHA. |
It's a real asset to have someone who will take ideas like that and help you make them happen and we have such supports in Mr. Casey Claxon and The Novelty Advertising Company.
Casey has helped us on a number of projects, including a custom printed calendar and wallet card that we distributed as part of our FundaMENTAL Health initiative for workplace mental wellness. He helped us with our local recognition of International Talk Like a Pirate Day and he and his company are helping us again with Java & Jazz.
For the second year, Casey has worked his magic and convinced his company to sponsor the tickets for the auction. This is a real benefit to us and another example of how relentlessly helpful and valuable Casey continues to be to our organization.
Times being what they are, I can't always turn everything we have asked Casey to quote for us into a paying job, but he keeps taking my calls and he continues to deliver for us and that helps us to deliver for the people of Licking County.
When you click on the button to the right and order your tickets for Java & Jazz, you will receive in the mail an example of Casey's hard work on our behalf. If you've met Casey, you know he does this for all of his clients and if you haven't met him yet, it's only a matter of time.
Thank you Casey and thank you to The Novelty Advertising Company.

The Blue Jackets Are Coming!
![]() |
Courtesy of WCLT, we are offering 4 tickets to the March 20th Blue Jackets Game |
The game takes place at 5 pm and the seats are in the "lower bowl" which means pretty close to the action.
One of the first things you notice about hockey is how big the ice surface is (85' x 200').
And then you notice how 12 players seem to fill it right up. One minute they are all clustered around the goalie and then, in a flash, they can be down at the other end and back again.
It's also hard not to be impressed by Stinger, the Jackets' mascot bug--the hardest working insect in professional hockey. He (I think he's a "he") also seems to be everywhere at once. Even though he's a bug, you never think of him as a pest. More of a scamp, really.
One thing is for certain, no matter the final score, you and three friends will have a terrific time at Nationwide Arena, provided you are the winning bidder.

Get the Big Picture

Perhaps because I know how easy it is to take a bad picture I really appreciate people who know what they are doing and who can make great photographs.
A good portrait is not easy to pull off, especially if your subject is uncomfortable and squirming around. (High probability of thumbs in frame there.) It's a job best left to professionals and have we got just the person for you.
Molly Conomy, of Tiny Portraits Photography has generously donated a $200 gift certificate for a portrait session. Check out her website and you will get a good idea of the excellent work that she does. (She also does pet portraits.)

Polypotamia Was NOT A Cambodian Dictator!
In 2010, once and future Java & Jazz host, Brian Unger hosted a show on the History Channel based on the book, How the States Got Their Shapes.
The program looks at the many different arguments and eventual compromises that resulted in the map that we have today.
Planned as a one-time special, the program was well-received and is now being produced as a weekly series that should air later this year.
Here's your chance to see the original program and learn where the state of Polypotamia might have been. (I wonder what their state university mascot might have been....)
Up for bid at this year's auction, is a DVD copy of the special provided by Mr. Unger and The History Channel.

You Really Really Wanted to Go
New Orleans in early January sounded like the ideal post-holidays getaway, but then there was that project due at work and not quite enough left in the rainy day fund.
Now, thanks to Paddy Kutz, MHA's own ultimate sports fan, you can make your friends and neighbors green with envy as you have all the evidence you will need to make them think you went.
Included in the package is everything from the official souvenir program, a pair of collectible tickets, a pair of T-shirts, an official OSU Sugar Bowl hoodie and a pair of bam bams.
Also in the package are next day editions of the Times-Picayune, Newark Advocate, the OSU Lantern and the sports section from USA Today all trumpeting the Buckeye victory.
And don't you know that while you were in New Orleans you also had time to take in a basketball game between the New Orleans Hornets and the Golden State Warriors and you will have the tickets and game day program to prove it.
But it wasn't all about sports. Between games you had time to explore one of the country's most colorful cities including the storied Bourbon Street where you collected more than 20 sets of beads! (We don't even want to know what you had to do to get those....)
Bragging rights in a box are available to the high bidder at this year's Java & Jazz.

The Energy Cooperative Signs On as Sponsor
We are pleased to announce that, in addition to donating an electric grill to our Java & Jazz benefit auction, The Energy Cooperative has agreed to co-sponsor the event.
Confirmation came earlier this afternoon and Paddy Kutz, Mental Health America's Executive Director, couldn't be happier.
"We are so blessed to have so many supporters in the business community who see value in what we are doing and who continue to support us. The Energy Cooperative has been a generous supporter of MHA through the years."

The Great Outdoors Smells Like Chicken
Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote that "in the spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love."
But, as playwright David Mamet wrote, "things change."
And as that young man grows up, his thoughts turn again to thoughts of cooking outside and the many secret ingredients to be assembled into a killer barbecue sauce. (Think peanut butter.)
Thanks to our friends at The Energy Cooperative, we will be able to tickle the fancy of one high-bidding would-be griller with this Dimplex PowerChef Metro outdoor grill.
The Metro delivers full size power in a compact, go-anywhere design. This electric grill features a durable weatherproof black matte finish, large removable drip tray, manual control for simple, precise cooking, and EvenSear dual element cooking system that prevents cold spots. With this Dimplex PowerChef electric grill, the entire grill surface will reach a 650 degree searing temperature which means this grill cooks as much as a grill twice its size! Because it is electric, the Dimplex PowerChef Metro is perfect for apartments, condos, and balconies that do not allow gas grills.
